Brno Christmas 2016 – one of the biggest events in the city centre. This year’s event will in many ways follow on from last year, but will also bring many novelties. Advent in Brno will therefore be diverse and focus on good music, excellent gastronomy and modern design.
Brno Christmas, which will take place from 25 November to 23 December, involves events which brighten up Freedom Square, Radnická Street and now also Dominican Square. This year’s events will show Brno in a new light from a kaleidoscopic view. The new visual Brno Christmas is based on the idea of a kaleidoscopic Christmas made up of typical Brno photographs.
Advent on Freedom Square will reverberate to the rhythm of swing and folklore. These musical genres will be projected into the main cultural programme and into accompanying programmes. Among the main stars will be Dan Bárta and Lenka Dusilová. The big names will be supported by the succeeding generation such as beat boxer En.dru and singer Sisa Fehérová.
All events will begin with the festive lighting up of the Christmas tree on Friday, 25 November at 5.00 p.m., accompanied by a light show. In the days to follow stands with a traditional assortment of things will be open every day from 9.00 a.m. to 9.45 p.m. The markets will not end until 23 December. Apart from stands, three design modules, i.e. glass containers in which those interested can try out virtual reality or buy Christmas souvenirs, will be installed on Freedom Square. The children’s programme will hold the most prominent position in the entire Brno Christmas programme. The popular Celebrities Read to Children cycle from last year makes a return with an appearance from such names as Anna Polívková and Dušan Vitásek. There will also be the Jesus Post, ZOO Corner, Christmas workshops for children on the square and a nativity by carver Jiří Halouzka. This year it will include large wooden figures which will serve as photo points for children and adults.
Glass modules with a diverse programme will also be installed in Radnická Street as part of the Radnická RESTART programme. People will find a design market there, Market of Non-profit Organisations or a ticket office for the next year’s Grand Prix, for example.
One of the main attractions of Brno Christmas will also be gastronomy. Besides the traditional stands, there will a new large Winter Bar on Freedom Square. Guests will be able to sit down comfortably and enjoy alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks even in bad weather.
All of Dominican Square will be devoted to gastronomy. Gourmet Christmas will offer historically traditional festive fish and chicken specialities. If visitors to Brno’s city centre will want to find a quiet spot to experience the true atmosphere of Advent and taste the best from the offer of Brno gastronomy, they can come to Dominican Square.
The system of returnable containers will be operating again at all the Christmas and Advent markets. This year drinks will be served in returnable cups and porcelain mugs. These will contain the Náš Ježíšek (Our Jesus) design, but a limited edition has also been designed by artist Petr Kvíčala.
